At this month’s full council meeting, Cllr. Martin Hughes (Lab, Maesteg East) asked for an update on the performance of adult social care services in the county.

He asked what the council was doing to ensure residents receive timely and quality support, despite increasing demand.

Deputy Council Leader & Cabinet Member for Social Services, Cllr. Jane Gebbie (Lab, Pyle, Kenfig Hill & Cefn Cribwr), said her biggest concerns were the ageing demographics of Bridgend and the increased number of people needing care with complex needs.

Cllr. Gebbie said there would need to be a “conversation with residents” on how these services will be delivered in the future, as residents will need to take greater responsibility for looking after themselves.

Cllr. Gebbie added that problems which lead to someone needing social care are increasingly down to people not taking their own health seriously, not just old age. As a result, preventing ill health will become even more important.
