Bridgend Council’s Cabinet is to review several options for residential care and adult placement services over the next five years (pdf).
Residential Care
The review covered care homes as well as extra care services.
Officers are satisfied that following the recent opening of a nursing home for residents with advanced dementia, there are enough care home placement options. The future goal will be to make more care homes in the county “dementia friendly”.
In the longer term, discussions will start with housing associations over providing a fourth extra care facility in the county – though this will require a full business case.
The existing extra care homes in Bridgend are in Kenfig Hill (pictured above), Maesteg and Ynysawdre. Extra care homes are a form of assisted living that allows residents/tenants to live more independently than they would in a care home.
Complex Needs & Adult Placement
There have been gaps identified in support for residents with complex or lifelong care needs.
Consideration is being given to introducing a “core and cluster” service. This means support teams would be based at a “core setting” (I assume this means a care home or something similar), but can also be sent out to support people living independently in the local area. This is a model being considered for the Sunnyside Wellness Village.
Bridgend Council currently works jointly with Vale of Glamorgan Council to provide short-term placements and breaks with a host family (“Shared Lives”). This service is used by adults with learning disabilities and host families are paid based on the level of care they need to provide.
Subject to Cabinet approval, this partnership will be extended for another five years.
