At this month’s full council meeting, Cllr. Martin Williams (Ind, Coity Higher) asked about how well the council sticks to its own policies. He cited an example of a recent planning committee meeting concerning an application in Porthcawl. The advice from officers was to accept a cut in parking spaces at a new development in order to make commercial bus routes more viable.

In a written answer, the Council Leader told Cllr. Williams that the council didn’t have a policy to reduce the number of parking spaces for this reason.

Other examples given by Cllr. Williams include developments being approved which appeared contrary to policies of the Local Development Plan, as well as BCBC’s “heavy-handed” approach to licensing cake sheds. Cllr. Williams asked, “Who was actually in charge?” and was the Leader “the tail or the dog?”

Council Leader, Cllr. John Spanswick (Lab, Brackla West Central) refused to answer “such a silly question”. All he would say was that Labour was in control, “doing great things and going (sic) great places”.
