An extraordinary meeting of Bridgend Council’s Planning Committee to decide on the controversial Hybont project – a hydrogen and solar scheme across two sites in Bryncethin and Brynmenyn – will be held next month.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday 17th October 2024.

Committee members will undertake site visits to the two locations in the morning, with the meeting itself to start at 2 pm.

Given what is described in the accompanying report (pdf) as “more than normal levels of public interest”, a maximum of three objectors will be given 10 minutes each to speak at the meeting, with the applicant given 10 minutes to respond. Local councillors will also be given time to speak separately.

However, the application is subject to a “call-in” by the Welsh Government. Even if the planning committee decides to reject the application, a final decision could yet be made by a Welsh Government minister.

In those circumstances, the planning committee can only offer an opinion on whether the application should be approved or rejected.

Opponents of Hybont are set to hold another protest outside BCBC’s Civic Offices ahead of this month’s full council meeting next Wednesday (25th September 2024). The protest is set to start at 3:30 pm.
