An outline planning application has been submitted for a retail development at Waterton’s Ewenny Industrial Estate.
The proposed development would include a 1,900 sq m Aldi supermarket, a 2,200 sq m Marks & Spencer Food store and a Costa Coffee drive-thru. The retail park would be accessed off a new traffic light junction on the A473 dual carriageway.
As this is an outline planning application, if approved, more detailed applications will need to be submitted and approved by planning officers in the future.
M&S had sought land in the Vale of Glamorgan for a store, but couldn’t find a suitable site. This proposal would meet their expected demand in the Vale of Glamorgan as well as the Bridgend & Porthcawl areas.
Cheapside Aldi expected to close
When the planning application was being prepared for Aldi’s new store at Brackla – currently under construction – the company said it wouldn’t affect their Cheapside store.
However, the supporting documents confirm that if this application is approved, the current Aldi at Cheapside in Bridgend town centre will close, with the proposed store replacing it. This is because the land at Cheapside will form part of future (unannounced) expansion plans for Bridgend College.
