Bridgend Council’s Planning Committee has approved an application for a self-storage facility on land to the south of Wyndham Close at Brackla Industrial Estate (pdf).
The land – which lies within the Coity Higher ward – forms part of the former Second World War munitions storage facility known locally as the “8Xs” and has been derelict for decades.
The plans include 149 containers, accessed from a new junction on Wyndham Close. The compound will be secured with a palisade fence.
In 2019, Hafod Housing Association submitted an application for 41 homes on the land. This was refused by Bridgend Council because it was too far from public transport and didn’t put enough measures in place to deal with noise. An appeal was dismissed by planning inspectors.
Developer “advised” to consider Brackla Hill footpath
Six objections were raised by residents. Concerns include the impact on possible wildlife on the land, noise & light pollution, privacy issues around CCTV cameras, and a belief that there are enough self-storage facilities in the Bridgend area.
Andrew RT Davies MS (Con, Pen-y-bont Bro Morgannwg) wrote in support of the application.
Cllr. Martin Williams (Ind, Coity Higher) raised concerns about a claimed right of way which connects Wyndham Close to the Brackla Hill open space. A similar objection was made by BCBC’s Rights of Way team.
Planning officers decided against including a condition on this as they say it’s a matter that’s outside of the planning process and is governed by different laws. However, they included an “advisory note” that the developers enter into an agreement to include, divert or remove/extinguish the claimed right of way.
The developer was also warned that they can’t obstruct a right of way, even if it’s only claimed.
