Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water (DCWW) have submitted a request for an environmental screening opinion from Bridgend Council as part of plans to replace 5.75km of sewer serving North Cornelly.
DCWW needs a screening opinion as the proposed pipeline path runs through the Kenfig Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The accompanying report says that the existing sewer main (Marlas rising main) has had 37 bursts since 2023, “resulting from significant deterioration in the pipeline infrastructure”.
Serious pollution incidents have occurred at the River Kenfig, in part because the temporary pipelines and arrangements put in place can’t cope with full flows. Until the main is replaced, it will remain a “significant spill risk”.
The proposed pipe will run roughly along the same line as the existing one, ending at the southern edge of Port Talbot steelworks.
