Bridgend Council’s Cabinet is to discuss the outcome of a public consultation on a new dog control order (pdf).
The consultation was launched earlier this year, with the previous order expiring in 2022.
The order will apply to all public spaces across Bridgend County and will require all people in control of a dog to collect and bag dog mess (or have bags on them to do so) and place a dog on a lead when asked to by an authorised official.
Anyone not doing so would receive an on-the-spot fine of £100 (potentially rising to £1,000 if it goes to court for non-payment).
Over 1,200 people responded to the consultation (pdf), 65% of whom own a dog. 91.9% supported the order. Comments raised concerns about dog fouling on sports pitches, but also revealed scepticism over how the council will enforce the rules.
Dogs Trust wanted the council to focus on irresponsible dog ownership, and also requested more dog waste bins. They cautioned against any clampdown on off-lead dogs as dogs are legally protected under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 to “exhibit normal behaviour”.
The Cabinet will now decide whether to approve the order.
