Bridgend Council has launched a public consultation on a new three-year dog control order.

The proposed order is identical to a previous one. It will apply to all public spaces in Bridgend County, meaning that:

  • Dog owners MUST have bags to dispose of dog mess at all times – and actually dispose of it – in any public place.
  • Dog owners MUST put a dog on a lead if directed to by “an authorised officer”.

There are exemptions for dog owners with disabilities that prevent them from complying, as well as assistance dogs and working dogs.

The consultation is open until 25th May 2026. All of the details are available here.

No plans to ban dogs from sports pitches (yet)

BBC Wales recently reported that a Tondu RFC player received treatment in hospital for an infection that doctors believe is linked to dog faeces entering a cut.

This incident has reopened a debate on whether to introduce a blanket ban on dogs being allowed onto the county’s marked sports pitches.

Other counties in Wales – such as Rhondda Cynon Taf and Caerphilly – have already introduced such a ban.

There’s nothing in this order that would ban dogs from sports pitches. However, sports pitches are naturally included in the order (regarding bags and leashes) along with every other public space in the county.

BBC Wales reports that Bridgend Council are weighing up a ban. However, a ban would likely need its own order and separate public consultation in the future.
