At this month’s full council meeting, Cllr. Tim Thomas (Ind, St. Bride’s Minor & Ynysawdre), asked about Bridgend Council’s performance in responding to Freedom of Information (FOI) requests.
Cllr. Thomas said freedom of information requests were integral to transparency and democracy. While the written response to his question noted the volume/number of FOI requests, nothing was said about the council’s performance.
Cllr. Thomas asked what percentage of the 939 FOI requests received during 2025 were responded to within the statutory/legal limit of 20 working days?
Council Leader, Cllr. John Spanswick (Lab, Brackla West Central), didn’t provide an answer to that question, but accepted that BCBC’s performance needs to improve.
He said the Cabinet will review the council’s FOI system, which may need extra resources. However, it was also worth considering whether some FOI requests could be dealt with differently and more cheaply – such as through the councillor referral system.
