Bridgend Council’s Cabinet is set to approve a public consultation on a three-year extension to a county-wide dog control order (pdf).
The previous public space protection order – introduced in 2019 – expired in June 2022. The order is described as “an effective deterrent to deal with particular nuisance or problems in a specified area that is detrimental to the quality of life of the local community.”
The new order – which, subject to Cabinet approval, will go out for public consultation in January 2023 – has broadly the same conditions as the previous order.
- Dog owners MUST have bags to dispose of dog mess at all times – and actually dispose of it – in any such public place.
- Dog owners MUST put a dog on a lead if directed to by “an authorised officer”.
Failure to do any of the above will result in an on-the-spot fine. There will continue to be an exemption for disabled people whose disability would prevent them from collecting dog mess.
While you would expect sports pitches to be covered under the definition of “public open spaces” there are seemingly no plans yet to ban dogs from sports pitches in Bridgend. This is despite other local authorities in the area – such as Caerphilly and Newport – doing so.
