A planning application has been submitted to convert Bridgend’s Grade II listed former fire station on Derwen Road into a live music venue.

The former fire station (and postal depot) was constructed in the 1930s and has been derelict for several decades.

Subject to approval, the plan is for Hobos to move to the restored fire station from Queen Street. Although the planning documents list a placeholder name “Firestation” for the venue, no final decision has been made yet.

Since opening, Hobos quickly became a popular feature of Bridgend’s nightlife, focusing mainly on rock, metal and alternative music. Resultingly, Hobos has been likened to similar (long closed) venues in south Wales such as Newport’s TJs and Cardiff’s Barfly.

Following the impact the Covid-19 pandemic had on the hospitality and entertainment industry, the building was severely damaged by Storm Eunice in February 2022 and has remained closed, putting the future of the venue in jeopardy.

“It would be a suitable re-use, contributing to Bridgend county’s regeneration, rehoming an important cultural venue of the area, which has hosted well-known touring bands and artists, while also helping to provide a starting platform for emerging local artists.”
– PJ Lee Architects, supporting planning documents.

While the former fire station has a similar footprint to the current Hobos, the public area would be on the ground floor (Hobos is only accessible via stairs, IIRC), as well as a sizable rear courtyard on Station Hill.

The main dancefloor, foyer, bar, 50sqm stage and toilets (including an accessible toilet) would all be on the ground floor and directly accessible from Derwen Road – with red neon lights on the front and side of the building.

A basement would be used as a backstage area/green room. An elevated DJ booth and staff office would be located on a mezzanine level overlooking the dancefloor.
