A proposed housing development on a former railway cutting is set to go to appeal.
In 2021, Mulberry Homes (previously known as Paddle Homes) submitted plans for a housing development at Waunscil Avenue.
The plans include:
- 70 homes, accessed off Waunscil Avenue (near the shops).
- An equipped playing area near the Chorleywood Close allotments.
- A walking/cycling route from lanes (to the rear of Gwaun Coed) to the top of Morfa Street, with a ramp connecting it to the lane between the Meadows estate and Vernon Street/Charles Street. The long-term plan is to connect this to Pendre.
The appeal has been made because Bridgend Council hadn’t decided on the application within legal time limits.
The land has been the subject of numerous planning applications since the late 1980s, but the majority of them have been rejected or dismissed on appeal.
There have been previous proposals that were rejected due to a lack of affordable housing. Additionally, there have been long-standing concerns about landfill gases and the loss of a “green wedge” between Brackla and Bridgend town.
Local county and town/community councillors have consistently opposed the development too.
