Mulberry Homes (formerly known as Paddle Homes) has submitted a formal planning application for a housing development on a former railway line at Waunscil Avenue in Bridgend.
A pre-application consultation ended on 12th April. The proposals are seemingly unchanged:
- 70 homes, made up of 65 three-bedroom houses, 4 four-bedroom houses and 1 two-bedroom coach house. These would be accessed off Waunscil Avenue near the shop.
- An equipped playing area near the Chorleywood Close allotments.
- A walking/cycling route running along the site from lanes to the rear of Gwaun Coed to the top of Morfa Street, with a ramp connecting it to the lane between the Meadows estate and Vernon Street/Charles Street. The long-term plan is to connect this to Pendre.
The site has become a target for fly-tipping and there’s Japanese knotweed present in some parts. It’s likely the developers will argue that, as a brownfield site, it’s better to build something there than leave it to grow wild.
However, previous proposals have been thrown out over the lack of affordable housing (there’s no sign of any affordable housing in this proposal either), while there have been long-standing concerns locally about the presence of landfill gases and the loss of a “green wedge” between Brackla and Bridgend town proper. Local county and town/community council members are likely to oppose the development.
