Two petitions have been launched calling for Porthcawl’s Coney Beach funfair to be protected for leisure use.
The land was recently sold to the Welsh Government as part of efforts by Bridgend Council to progress regeneration projects in the town.
The Coney Beach area has been earmarked for a mixed-use development, an access road to a new housing development at Sandy Bay and an extension to Griffin Park (to compensate for land lost to the access road).
The redevelopment of the site isn’t imminent. The Evans family – owners of the fair – issued a statement following the sale which suggests the fair could remain in operation for a few more years.
Both petitions argues that the eventual loss of the fair will be a major blow to tourism in Porthcawl. They hope that outside investment could protect or improve the fairground.
