Bridgend Council has launched a public consultation seeking opinions on options drafted to deal with high levels of air pollution along Park Street in Bridgend.
Following a number of pandemic-related deadline extensions, the Welsh Government gave BCBC until 30th September 2022 to draft a plan.
The accompanying draft action plan (pdf) lists more than 20 different proposals including cost-benefit analyses.
Two options continue to be preferred and haven’t changed from previous reports:
- Closing access to St Leonard’s Road from Park Street.
- Re-phasing the traffic lights at the Angel Street-Park Street-A473 junction.Recent work has been undertaken to replace the traffic lights at the Angel Street junction; it’s unclear if this was related.
There are no precise figures, but the cost of both options has been estimated at between £20,000-£100,000.
The report says the two measures are expected to cut nitrogen dioxide levels by 12% at areas of most concern.
When the most recent report was published on this, a local residents group published their own assessment of the report’s findings.
They’ve requested clarification on several points from BCBC including why breaches continued at some monitoring stations during the pandemic, full future traffic projections as well as more detailed data used to justify the options BCBC have taken forward.
