This week, Bridgend Council’s Cabinet will consider a request from the local taxi trade to increase fares (pdf).
Current tariffs were set in September 2022. Since then, the taxi trade has faced increased fuel, maintenance and insurance costs. The trade has also reportedly found it more difficult to recruit and retain drivers, who are increasingly switching to out-of-county private hire companies.
As things stand, Bridgend’s taxi fares are roughly in the middle of Welsh averages and are similar to Caerphilly, Torfaen and Pembrokeshire.
A full list of proposed tariff changes is in the report. The recommendation is for a roughly 12% increase across the board, which would lift Bridgend to the fourth-highest fares of Wales’ 22 local authorities.
In practical terms, this would mean that a 2-mile daytime (Tariff 1) fare would increase from £6.80 to £7.65.
If approved, the new fares would come into force from 16th December 2026.
