A planning application has been submitted on behalf of énergie Fitness (sic) to open a new gym at the Bridgend Shopping Centre off Brackla Street and Cheapside.
énergie Fitness has clubs across the UK and Republic of Ireland, but Bridgend would be only their second franchise in Wales.
If approved, the gym will be located in the former warehouse of Food Giant on the first floor of the shopping centre and will be accessed from a new glazed entrance on Cheapside (opposite the police station).
The shopping centre has experienced mixed fortunes recently. Dessert chain Kaspas are moving in, but the centre will be losing Argos at the end of the month (as they relocate to Sainsbury’s) and has already lost Store 21 due to the company entering administration.
The centre was bought by property developers Ashfield Land in May 2017 for £5million, after the previous owners – Hawkstone Properties – went into administration. Hawkstone oversaw the refurbishment of the centre and had planned to construct apartments above the Cheapside entrance, but it’s likely those plans are now stalled, if not completely dead.
