With proposals well underway for a replacement Mynydd Cynffig Primary, the next phase of school modernisation sees the focus shift towards North Cornelly (pdf).
Primary school provision in the west of Bridgend county was selected as one of the top priorities for modernisation by Bridgend Council.
At present, North Cornelly and South Cornelly are served by two English-medium primary schools (Afon-y-Felin and Corneli), while Ysgol Y Ferch O’r Sgêr is the Welsh-medium primary for Porthcawl and the Kenfig Hill/Pyle/Cornelly area.
Proposals drafted by Bridgend Council would see Afon-y-Felin and Corneli schools close and merge at a new school located at Plas Morlais on the Marlas estate. This would include community sports facilities. The new school would be two-form entry and would also have a 60-place nursery and 15 spaces for children with Additional Learning Needs.
A replacement Ysgol Y Ferch O’r Sgêr would be built on the current Corneli Primary site. The new school would expand to become a two-form entry Welsh-medium school with a 60-place Welsh-medium nursery.
The plans require formal public consultation and planning applications. Depending on the outcome of that and subject to approval, the new English-medium primary would open in September 2023, while the new Ysgol Y Ferch O’r Sgêr would be completed by September 2024.
