Budget supermarket chain Aldi is Bridgend Council’s preferred bidder for land at the Salt Lake regeneration site in Porthcawl (pdf).
Subject to planning permission, a new supermarket would be built at the northern end of Salt Lake, with a new access off the Portway roundabout.
Five bids were received by Bridgend Council, three of which didn’t comply with the development brief. The names of the bidders haven’t been revealed for commercial sensitivity reasons.
The land will be sold on a 999-year lease, with Aldi expected to submit a planning application within six months of approval of sale by BCBC’s Cabinet.
If planning permission isn’t granted within 18 months – or if the supermarket isn’t completed within three years of being granted permission – the agreement will be automatically terminated. In the latter scenario, Bridgend Council will have to refund up to 90% of the purchase price.
Bridgend Council intends to use just over £2.55million in proceeds from the sale of the land on infrastructure improvements within the waterfront regeneration area, including an upgrade to the Hillsboro car park.
