Bridgend Council’s Cabinet will review an annual report on the council’s Welsh-medium education plan (pdf).
The current 10-year plan was agreed in 2022. The overall aim is to increase the proportion of Welsh-medium primary school entries to between 14-18% of all children in the county by 2032. As of 2026, the figure stands at 10%, aided by a decrease in the number of reception-age children.
Another key milestone is that all Welsh-medium pupils in Year 6 transferred to Year 7 at Ysgol Gyfun Llangynwyd in 2025. Similarly, all applicants for Welsh-medium education at reception, nursery and Year 7 level were offered a place at their first-preference school.
The strategy is aided by two future expansions of Welsh-medium primary schools at Ysgol Bro Ogwr and Ysgol Y Ferch o’r Sger, as well as the establishment of a seeding school in Porthcawl.
32 teachers have enrolled on National Centre for Learning Welsh courses, while the number of sixth formers studying A-level Welsh language doubled in 2025 – though it remains very low at just 31 entries.
However, only 76 teachers in English-medium schools (primary and secondary) are identified as being proficient enough in Welsh to teach at a Welsh-medium school.
