McDonald’s has launched a public consultation on a proposed drive-thru restaurant on the outskirts of Bridgend town centre.
If that sounds familiar, it’s because a similar proposal – at a former car sales site on Tondu Road – was rejected by BCBC planning officers in July 2024 because it wasn’t deemed a suitable land use.
This time around, the proposed site is on land currently used by Dainton Self-Storage and Business Park at the former Coity Sidings on Coity Road (next door to Pendre allotments, artist’s impression above).
Much like the Tondu Road site, the land is allocated for employment use in the Local Development Plan (LDP), but only for light industry, storage or office-based developments.
However, the proposal isn’t completely identical to the one previously proposed for Tondu Road.
For one, the footprint of the building appears to be smaller. The car park would also have fewer spaces – 28, compared to the previous proposal’s 44. The Coity Road proposal also includes 3 EV charging bays, when (as far as I remember) none were proposed at Tondu Road.
A turning circle would be provided at the northern end of the site (Jewsons Litchard Aggregates).
McDonald’s claims 110 full and part-time jobs would be created if approved.
