Bridgend Council has published traffic orders which are set to result in three stretches of road returning to a 30 mph speed limit (pdf).
In 2024, the Welsh Government announced a review of how the default 20 mph speed limit in built-up areas – introduced in September 2023 – has been applied.
As a result, local authorities were allowed to propose changing the speed limit back to 30 mph on stretches of road that don’t quite meet the guidelines for a 20 mph limit (which, generally, meant roads where vehicles and vulnerable road users/pedestrians/cyclists are likely to mix frequently).
Anyone reading this hoping for massive changes will be disappointed.
The three (fairly short) stretches of road set to revert to 30 mph are:
- Park Street and Bryntirion Hill (A473, pictured) between the Bryngolau/Broadlands junction and St Leonard’s Road bus stops. The section between the Angel Street junction and St Leonard’s Road will remain at 20mph.
- Pencoed Way/Coychurch Road between St Mary’s Close and Croesty Primary School.
- The first part of South Road, Porthcawl, between Fulmar Road and the layby/parking area.
