McDonald’s has submitted full plans for a new drive-thru restaurant to the north of Bridgend town centre.

Towards the end of 2023, several applications were submitted for signage relating to a new drive-thru at the former SJB car dealership at Trews Field Industrial Estate off Tondu Road.

The proposed drive-thru would have a different design from other McDonald’s restaurants in the area, being two-storey instead of one-storey.

The site will have a total of 44 parking spaces and 10 spaces for cycle parking.

The application confirms the new drive-thru would be in addition to the existing Picton Court restaurant off the A48, with hopes it might relieve traffic pressures there.

No proposals have been included for improvements to the Trews Field-Tondu Road junction. This means cars travelling in certain directions would need to cross a 50mph dual carriageway at an uncontrolled junction (as things stand). The developers believe the junction can cope with traffic generated by the drive-thru.

However, several options have been tabled for minor improvements along Trews Field, including double yellow lines (in an attempt to maintain two-way traffic) and a raised table.

A few route options have also been submitted for a shared walking/cycle path – either along Tondu Road or Trews Field itself (from Millfield).

McDonald’s expects the proposed drive-thru to create up to 120 full and part-time jobs. Subject to permission, they aim to open the restaurant in 2025.
