Grass-cutting services set to be brought back “in-house”

As some of you might remember, in 2024, Bridgend Council’s Cabinet decided to bring its grass-cutting service “in-house”. This means it’ll be run directly by the council instead of being contracted out.

In an update provided to county councillors yesterday (15th May 2025), Cabinet Member for Climate Change & Environment, Cllr. Paul Davies (Lab, Caerau), said that while progress has been made in bringing in the necessary equipment, there have been recruitment problems.

This has meant that grass-cutting has fallen behind schedule. In response to this, Cllr. Davies said that BCBC is considering options such as:

  • Rethinking the recruitment campaign – This includes working with recruitment agencies and Employability Bridgend. The job description will be changed to widen the pool of candidates to include non-drivers.
  • Redeploying staff from other related services.
  • Prioritising grass cutting where it’s needed for road safety.
  • Making the job a permanent role rather than seasonal, which is hoped will make it more attractive. This might include grass-cutting in the summer and street cleaning in the winter.

Bridgend Council is also actively working on bringing waste and recycling services in-house.
