Full planning applications have been submitted for a new English-medium school – and a replacement Welsh-medium school – in North Cornelly.
The replacement schools have been discussed for several years but have faced budget decision delays.
The new English-medium school (pictured above) will be built on vacant land at Heol-y-Parc on the Marlas Estate. The school will replace Afon-y-Felin and Corneli primary schools. The new school will have places for 420 pupils, a 60-pupil nursery and 15 places for pupils with Additional Learning Needs.
A Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) and sports court are proposed at the Gibbons Way end and these “could potentially be used by the local community”.
The replacement Ysgol Y Ferch o’r Sger (pictured below) will relocate to the current site of Corneli Primary School – which is next door to the current school.
As with the new English-medium school, there’ll be a capacity for 420 pupils and 60 nursery places. The school will also have its own MUGA/courts. The current Ysgol Y Ferch o’r Sger site will become a staff and Children’s Centre car park, with a new bus drop-off area provided.
BCBC’s capital spending programme suggests that work on the schools could start during the 2025-26 financial year (so sometime before April 2026).
