This week, Bridgend Council’s Cabinet will discuss a proposal to ban the awarding of live animals as prizes on council-owned land (pdf).
The Shared Regulatory Service – a regulatory body run jointly by Bridgend, Vale of Glamorgan and Cardiff councils – has had its attention drawn to an RSPCA campaign seeking to ban live animal prizes.
People who win such prizes – usually goldfish, but sometimes including other animals such as birds; even dogs and horses – may not have planned to become pet owners and may not have anything in place for the animal’s immediate needs.
There’s already a blanket ban on awarding live animals as prizes to under-16s and the law allows councils to introduce bans on live animal prizes on council-owned land. At least five councils in Wales have already done so.
There are no further details in the report on how or when a ban would be implemented or enforced, though this will likely come at a later date.
