South Wales Police has submitted plans for a new Police Learning Centre and associated training facilities at their headquarters on Cowbridge Road in Bridgend.

The new learning centre – across four floors – will include a lecture theatre, cafe, new offices for the Police & Crime Commissioner, new human resources offices, an assessment centre, advanced technology training labs and operational training rooms.

A new two-story gym and car park will also be built on the northern half of the site.

The Police & Crime Commissioner, Alun Michael (Lab), has pressed ahead with sharp increases to the policing precept in successive budgets. While capital budgets are separate from day-to-day running costs, it’s unclear how the public will react to this – even if it looks like being a very impressive facility. Is it a luxury in a time of public spending cuts? Or a necessity to give the next generation of police officers the best training opportunities?
