At this month’s full council meeting, Cllr. Jon-Paul Blundell (Lab, Cefn Glas) asked for an update on Bridgend Council’s pothole-filling programme.
Cllr. Blundell described potholes as the “number one issue” in his in-box, seeking an explanation for why the number of potholes has increased.
Joint Cabinet Member for Communities, Cllr. Eugene Caparros (Lab, Brackla East & Coychurch), told the chamber that in the period from February 2025 to February 2026, 5,475 potholes had been repaired, averaging over 100 per week.
The number of reports of potholes over the winter period were 25% higher than usual. Cllr. Caparros praised the work of council teams, who have “delivered results” despite working in all weathers.
£1.5 million will be invested in a new public realm team. This will mean an increase in the number of “hotbox” teams. These teams will permanently repair potholes by squaring them out. This is instead of the usual quick-fix method of filling them with asphalt from a bucket.
