Bridgend Council has confirmed that roadworks which have caused problems at the Tondu bridge junction over the last week or so have been paused.
Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water has started an extensive upgrade to water pipes in the area, while a recent gas leak near the junction has also caused disruption.
The accompanying temporary traffic light system caused lengthy tailbacks on the main road between Tondu and Maesteg, as well as in and around Aberkenfig and Sarn, prompting a stream of complaints on social media.
Bridgend Council monitored the impact of the roadworks during peak times. Following further discussions with Dwr Cymru’s traffic management contractor, Dwr Cymru decided to postpone the remainder of the works until a long-term solution can be found.
“Due to the nature of the works, the contractors were unable to avoid working at peak times and tried a variety of measures to improve the situation.
“Further meetings will now be held between the council and Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water to plan for the completion of the works possibly later in the year.
“The council would like to thank residents and motorists for their patience and understanding at this time.”

The normal traffic lights were restored last Saturday (11th March 2023).
As part of the 400+ home extension to Pentre Felin – currently under construction – a mini-bypass will eventually be built along with an upgrade to the Tondu bridge junction.
