Bridgend Council’s Cabinet is set to confirm a further delay to the proposed opening date of the new Heronsbridge Special School (pdf).
The school is now expected to open in September 2028.
The headteacher and Chair of Governors at the school have offered no objection to the change. The Cabinet report states they were expecting a delay and appreciate the work council officers have done to date.
"Good progress" on design work
The new school, set to be built at Island Farm, is currently expected to cost just under £60 million, which is almost double its original estimated cost of £34.5 million in 2021.
The report states that Kier Construction has made “good progress” on design work and has undertaken “extensive” consultation with the school and council officers.
The next report on the project presented to the Cabinet will likely concern the construction contract and the final cost estimate. Funding will have to be signed off by the Welsh Government, further complicated by the 2026 Senedd election.
