Bridgend Council’s Cabinet is set to green-light a replacement Heronsbridge Special School (pdf).
It follows a consultation process which drew no objections.
The new school is set to be built at Island Farm and will have an increased capacity for 300 pupils.
The only difference from the original proposal is the new school was earmarked to open in September 2025, but this has been pushed back by a few months to spring term 2026.
In a separate report (pdf), Bridgend Council sets out its procurement strategy – including the appointment of a specialist contractor due to the additional requirements to provide a modern special school.
Due to Brexit, inflation and other associated costs, the exact budget for the school hasn’t been set yet. £25million was allocated from the council’s new school capital funding programme, but this is likely to have increased.
Further details on the project costs – and options for residential and respite services at the new school – will be reported back to the Cabinet at a later date.
