Here’s a summary of the latest school inspection reports, as of Spring 2024 (pdf).

No follow-up action needed at five schools

Bettws Primary, Brackla Primary, Blaengarw Primary, Cefn Glas Infants and St Mary’s RC Primary all came through their inspections without any further follow-up action being required by Estyn (school inspectorate).

Betws, Brackla, St Mary’s and Blaengarw were praised for their outdoor learning strengths.

Blaengarw was selected for praise for its development of pupils’ speaking skills, while Brackla’s breakout areas for pupils in corridors and halls were said to support independent learning and cooperation.

Cefn Glas Infants was said to have a “warm and purposeful relationship between staff and pupils”. Meanwhile, St Mary’s Primary has been asked to work on a case study for their good work in providing high-quality learning experiences for younger pupils.

As for improvement recommendations, Betws has been asked to push pupils more on writing and numeracy, while Blaengarw needs to do more to develop writing, Welsh language and digital skills.

Brackla needs to provide better feedback to pupils on what they need to do to improve their work, while. Cefn Glas Infants needs to do more work to support independent learning and digital skills, while more needs to be done to improve Welsh language teaching at St Mary’s.

School taken off Estyn review list

In more good news, Croesty Primary in Pencoed is no longer under review from Estyn following an inspection in November 2022, which concluded the school wasn’t making enough progress.

Further work was requested on leadership, skills teaching, giving pupils feedback on work and school governance.

Following support from Bridgend Council and the Central South Consortium, Estyn is now satisfied that the school meets the requirements and no longer needs follow-up inspections.
