Bridgend Council held their annual general meeting (AGM) yesterday afternoon – which you can watch here. It’s the meeting where appointments to key civic and political positions are decided.
Mayor salutes county’s unsung heroes in final address
The Mayor of the county usually only serves a single year in office.
In his final address as Mayor, Cllr. Martyn Jones (Lab, Garw Valley) said the opportunity to represent the county at various events has been “wonderful”. Bridgend County was “enriched with incredible people” who make a positive impact on their communities “without seeking reward or recognition”.
Although he didn’t promote his selected charities in light of the cost-of-living crisis, he set out to attend as many charitable events as he could. £2,500 raise through donations will be donated to a Ukranian-based charity.
He went on to personally thank his mayoral assistant, Roger Harrison, who the outgoing Mayor described as “an asset to the authority” whose “professionalism and attention to detail” was recognised both within and beyond the council.
As is tradition, the role of Mayor passes to the previous Deputy Mayor, Cllr. William Kendall (Lab, Brackla East Central). Cllr. Heather Griffiths (Lab, Garw Valley) was nominated as the new Deputy Mayor.
No changes to Cabinet members; minor changes to responsibilities
There was no repeat of last year’s “drama” within the council Labour group, where there was a tied vote on the party group leadership.
Resultingly, Cllr. Huw David (Lab, Pyle, Kenfig Hill & Cefn Cribwr) remains Council Leader and the Cabinet remains unchanged, albeit with some changes to their portfolios:
