Four town and community councils have made formal requests for a review of the number of councillors and wards (pdf).
In October 2025, Bridgend Council rejected a proposed reorganisation of the county’s 20 town & community councils. This work will now be undertaken by the Local Democracy & Boundary Commission for Wales and imposed on Bridgend before the 2032 local elections.
Despite this, Bridgend Town Council, St. Bride’s Minor Community Council, Ynysawdre Community Council and Laleston Community Council have submitted requests for stand-alone reviews.
In the case of Bridgend Town, St. Bride’s Minor and Ynysawdre, as their requests are more complex (possibly resulting in new wards, boundary changes or mergers), the Local Democracy & Boundary Commission will need to undertake a full consultation. Due to tight deadlines, any changes wouldn’t be in place in time for next year’s local elections. Alternative/stopgap options are being considered and could be reported to the full council in the autumn.
The request from Laleston – which pre-dates the county-wide proposals – was more straightforward and can be undertaken by Bridgend Council itself. Terms of reference have been drafted (pdf):
- There will be no changes to existing wards, only the total number of community councillors and the numbers elected from each ward.
- A first consultation will start almost immediately and close in August 2026.
- Draft proposals will be published and put out for consultation during September-October 2026.
- Final proposals would be put to the full council for approval in December 2026, to be in place by May 2027.
