There’s still a week left to respond to a public consultation on plans for a replacement Ysgol Bro Ogwr. The public consultation closes next Monday (21st March 2022).
A virtual consultation meeting is taking place tomorrow (Tuesday March 15th) at 4 pm. You need to register to attend. The details are at the bottom of the Bridgend Council webpage – here.
The details and consultation document are available here, but it’s worth running through a summary of what’s planned.
- A two-and-a-half-form entry primary school (capacity 525 places, compared to 378 at the current Ysgol Bro Ogwr).
- A 90 full-time equivalent place nursery and 8-place observation and assessment class.
- The school will be built on land accessed off the Princess Way/Ffordd Cadfan roundabout (image above) with the school itself being in the Coity Higher community.
- Subject to planning permissions, decisions etc. the new school would open in September 2025. A final decision is expected to be made in July 2022.
- The current plan is for the existing Ysgol Bro Ogwr site on Meadow Rise to become an overspill English-medium primary school (due to overcrowding at Coety Primary) with a capacity of between 210-315 pupils – though this will be subject to a separate consultation process.
The existing Ysgol Bro Ogwr building is categorised as C (“poor and exhibiting defects”) on an A-D scale despite being built in the mid-1990s. It’s said there’s a £750,000 maintenance backlog. The consultation report mentions concerns about the state of the steel framework of canopies and water ingress, as well as outdated toilet facilities and classrooms said to be smaller the necessary standards.
The new school will include facilities – indoors and outdoors – for community use. Safe walking and cycling routes around the site will also be reviewed.
