The owners of the former “Taffy’s Tavern” (also previously known as PS Bar, The Angel & The Wicked Lady) on Bridgend’s Park Street have submitted a planning application to convert it into short-term housing for the homeless and anyone else who requires temporary accommodation.
Some rooms in the building have already been advertised for short-term lets on the likes of Airbnb, but the planning application will seek a formal change of use.
The redeveloped building will provide 6 bedrooms with a communal living room and kitchen on the first floor and 4 disabled-friendly bedrooms, a day room and a kitchen on the ground floor.
The planning statement implies the new centre would be staffed and have CCTV. It goes on to say that:
“There is a need for short term accommodation in Bridgend and the surrounding area, there is an increase in homeless due to Coronavirus, there will be a removal of “floor space” from several facilities due to next year and with the Evictions now resuming after Coronavirus people will be looking to the Local Council for help with housing needs in the short term. This is where we come in.”
It’s unclear whether the project will be privately-run or run in association with one of the homelessness charities.
The Wallich has a drop-in centre/office on Park Street and the charity also manages or co-manages other short-term housing facilities on Coity Road (Cornerstone House, Vesta Court and Ty Ogwr).
