A planning application has been submitted for a housing development at the former Blaenllynfi Infants School in Caerau. The application came from Cwmbran-based Pendragon Design & Build.

The former school – located on a triangular-shaped plot at Grosvenor Terrace – closed following the opening of Caerau Primary School. After being briefly used by the Caerau Development Trust, the site was cleared between 2013-2015 and outline planning permission for housing was approved in February 2017. That development never happened, so the site has remained vacant ever since.

This planning application was submitted to Bridgend Council in January 2022 following a pre-application consultation in 2021. The consultation resulted in some changes to the development’s layout.

The application says the homes will be “affordable”, but there’s no named housing association tied to the application as things stand.

The developers propose 16 one-bedroom apartments (in four two-storey blocks), 4 two-bedroom houses and 2 four-bedroom houses. The two-bedroom houses will be directly on Grosvenor Terrace, with the other properties accessed from two short culs-de-sac.

By my count, at least 30 off-street parking places would be provided, as well as a footpath through to Library Road.

As mining took place nearby, a full geotechnical survey was carried out. The report concluded that “it is considered that there is negligible risk to the site and the proposed development from shallow (mine) workings.”
