A few weeks ago, Cllr. Altaf Hussain (Con, Penyfai) noted how disappointed he was that there was little to no housing development proposed north of the M4.

A few days later and a modest housing proposal has been submitted for Pontycymer.

21 homes of between 2-5 bedrooms have been proposed on land in between the Pontycymer Co-Op store and the Blaengarw RFC clubhouse. The land was previously part of the Ffaldau Colliery and is currently derelict.

The development would be a single cul-de-sac accessed directly off Victoria Street via a new junction next to the clubhouse. Outline planning permission for housing on the land was granted in 1999, but no development occurred.

While the land hasn’t been included for housing in the current Local Development Plan, there is some leeway for so-called “windfall” and “infill” developments on brownfield sites.

An outline planning application also means it’s only an early proposal and a way for the council to decide if they would approve housing there in principle. If outline planning approval is granted, a more detailed planning application would need to be submitted in the future.
