Bridgend Council’s Cabinet is set to sign the BCBC up to the TUC’s “Dying to Work Charter” – which has been drafted to protect the rights of terminally-ill employees (pdf).
While the report says BCBC staff with a diagnosis of terminal illness are “treated with dignity and respect”, the Charter will require BCBC to make some changes, including:
- A specific statement within the council’s sickness and absence procedures that no employee with a terminal diagnosis will be dismissed because of their condition.
- Provide confidential advice and support – counselling and financial advice – to employees who’ve received a terminal diagnosis; something BCBC says they already do.
- Provide training to line managers and HR staff on how to deal with terminally-ill staff – again, something BCBC says they already do.
- Notify all employees that BCBC will commit the contents of the Charter.
