Bridgend Council’s Cabinet is set to suspend its usual contract rules to allow urgent works on the A4061 Bwlch-y-Clawdd pass at Nantymoel. It follows a landslide during Storm Bert in November 2024 (pdf).
The officer’s report says the landslide was caused by a culvert collapse, which resulted in the ground around the road becoming unstable. The road has been under temporary traffic control measures, with additional measures put in place to prevent more debris falling onto the road.
BCBC determined that they didn’t have the necessary expertise to carry out remedial works themselves.
Fortunately, contractors working on culverts at a coal tip near Nantymoel can take on the work. Normally, contracts have to go out for tender, but the rules are allowed to be suspended in an “emergency situation in which injury or damage to persons or property is threatened”.
The Nantymoel end of the Bwlch pass will be closed Mon-Fri between 9 am – 3:30 pm starting today (Monday 13th January 2025) with work expected to end by Friday February 7th 2025 now expected to end by 18th February 2025.
The work is expected to cost £131,000, with an application made to the Welsh Government for emergency funding under a financial assistance scheme set up following recent storms.
