The Welsh Government recently published data on the most hazardous coal tips across Wales.
While there are no immediate concerns, some coal tips may become unstable as a result of higher rainfall from climate change – increasing the risk of landslides.
The two categories of coal tips included on the map are Category C (light blue, should be inspected at least once a year) and Category D (purple, should be inspected at least twice a year). Responsibility for inspecting coal tips lies with the Coal Authority – a UK Government agency.
36 Category C and 6 Category D tips have been identified in Bridgend County.
Five of the Category D tips are located in and around Pont-y-rhyl in the Garw Valley (pictured), while the other is located to the north of Heol-y-cyw.
Most of the Category C tips (20) are in the Llynfi Valley – particularly in and around Maesteg (with one near Caerau).
There are 9 Category C tips in the Garw and 5 in the Ogmore Valley. A further two Category C tips are located near Heol-y-Cyw.
