While the problematic Heol Simonston/Coychurch Road junction (aka. “Singletons”) between Brackla and Coychurch was mentioned in the 2024 update on strategic transport projects, a long-term solution hasn’t been decided upon yet (pdf – p10-11).
The report acknowledges the “significant local congestion” problem at the junction. Anecdotally, accidents in and around the junction continue, while it remains dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists.
The preferred solution has long been a roundabout. However, changes to Welsh Government policies – which presume against funding road projects – make it more difficult for BCBC to secure the money.
The most up-to-date information I can find is from November 2024’s meeting of Brackla Community Council (pdf – p7).
Cllr. Eugene Caparros (Lab, Brackla East & Coychurch) – who co-led a community engagement programme with Cllr. Simon Griffiths (also Lab, Brackla East & Coychurch) following their election in 2022 – told community councillors that BCBC estimates a roundabout would cost in the region of £3million.
Interim measures include cutting back trees to improve visibility and possibly a speed limit cut (Heol Simonston and Coychurch Road are both 40mph at the junction).
