Fewer school governors in Bridgend risk disqualification due to switch to online training
Local authority governors are – as the name suggests – appointed to school governing bodies by BCBC and they’re usually, but not always, sitting councillors.
At the moment, local authority governors are appointed by the Cabinet – and this system has been in place since 2008. This system has prioritised councillors for vacancies, with the skills and experience of candidates often not being questioned to any great degree.
The proposal is for local authority governors to be appointed by a panel of council officers, who will judge all candidates for governor vacancies to ensure they have the proper knowledge, experience and skills.
Examples of the desired experience include good communication skills, knowledge of the education system in Wales, an ability to keep an open mind and a willingness to undertake the necessary training.
