Bridgend Council’s Corporate Parenting Committee have been updated on the Welsh Government’s planned basic income pilot for care leavers (pdf).
Under the proposals, all young people leaving care who turned 18 between July 2022 and July 2023 will receive a payment of £1,600-a-month (before tax) to “support them to make a successful transition into adulthood”. The pilot will last three years.
Bridgend Council has identified 25 eligible care leavers. They’ve been supported and advised by Citizen’s Advice to determine whether they would be better off or not by taking part.
All those identified as eligible have opted to take part. The next step is for the Welsh Government to work out how to measure the success of the pilot.
At the committee meeting, it was confirmed that BCBC will undertake its own assessment of the pilot’s impact and will report back every 6 months to a year.
The pilot is being fully funded by the Welsh Government.
