Later today, Cwm Taf Morgannwg health board’s Quality & Safety Committee will be provided with a further update on standards at the Ty Llidiard Child & Adolescent Mental Health (CAMHS) unit at the Princess of Wales Hospital (pdf).
The report makes positive reading, though the unit remains in what’s described as “enhanced monitoring arrangements” following a series of serious safety and standards failures.

Around 70% of patients at the unit are receiving treatment for eating disorders. There’s a broader issue of a lack of CAMHS beds, which is resulting in some young people being admitted to adult mental health wards or private units – many of which are outside Wales.
In terms of specifics, the report suggested there’s been a massive drop in the number of incidents at Ty Llidiard – from around 250 in March 2021 to just 16 across July and August 2022.
Additionally, there were no new complaints during the most recent reporting period. Monthly improvement board meetings continue.
Despite the progress, Ty Llidiard remains in “Level 4 escalation” and will continue to do so as “the scale and nature of changes required will continue to require sustained support and focus.”
