Last week, the Welsh Government announced the successful bids in the latest round of the active travel fund (pdf). Bridgend Council is set to receive more than £5million.
The bulk of this funding – just under £3.5million – will go towards the third phase of the Bridgend-Pencoed active travel route.
A consultation on the third phase took place earlier this year. The plans are for a route to connect the Waterton (pictured) and Coychurch roundabouts via Waterton Lane. It’ll also future-proof walking and cycling facilities for the Parc Afon Ewenni development. Work is expected to start during the 2022-23 financial year.
Other projects successfully awarded funding include:
- £707,000 core allocation – for smaller active travel projects and feasibility studies.
- £392,000 towards minor crossing improvements.
- £387,000 towards Phase 1 of a Porthcawl-Pyle active travel route in North Cornelly. The proposals include two new toucan crossings along School Terrace and a new crossing at the Woodland Place junction.
- £105,000 towards a new walking and cycling route linking Brynmenyn Primary School to the Ogmore Valley cycle route (NCN4).
Bridgend Council has also been granted £61,400 from the Welsh Government’s road safety fund.
