Bridgend Council is set to launch consultations for two new primary school units/learning resource centres for students with additional learning needs.
The first unit – set to be based at Tremains Primary in Brackla (pdf) – would cater for primary school-aged children with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD). The unit will take up to 8 pupils starting from September 2022 with admissions decided by an admissions panel.
The second unit – at Ysgol Cynwyd Sant in Maesteg (pdf) – would cater for Welsh-medium primary age pupils with moderate learning difficulties (MLD). Up to 15 places will be available from September 2022 and admissions will again be decided by a panel.
In both cases, the units will be integrated with mainstream schools, with small-group and whole-class activities taking place as appropriate.
The Tremains Primary unit will cost £82,000 and the Ysgol Cynwyd Sant unit £60,000. This appears to be mainly down to a difference in staffing with the Tremains unit having two support staff as well as a teacher and the Cynwyd Sant unit having a single teacher.
