Bridgend Council has agreed to sign up to the Welsh Government’s high street business rate relief programme for the 2020-21 financial year (pdf).
While aimed largely at town centre retailers, business rate relief of up to £2,500 will be available to most businesses based in premises with a rateable value of less than £50,000.
BCBC estimates that around 1,000 businesses in the county stand to benefit. As the rate relief is a Welsh Government programme, there are no direct costs to BCBC themselves.
In May 2019, Bridgend Council was criticised on the floor of the Senedd for the poor local take up of business rate relief.
