Plans for a new park-and-ride at Pyle railway station are set to be delivered a big blow by the Cardiff Capital Region Transport Authority – which is currently chaired by Bridgend Council leader, Cllr. Huw David (Lab, Cefn Cribwr).
The proposal for extended parking facilities was announced to great fanfare by Bridgend Council and the City Region in 2019 (with obligatory photo-op – above) and remains listed on the Cardiff Capital Region’s website as part of the city region’s Metro Plus programme.
However, in a report due to be discussed by the Cardiff Capital Region Transport Authority later this week, it states (pdf):
“Pyle park & ride has proven undeliverable and therefore all funding has been redirected to providing a comprehensive scheme at Porthcawl.”
The good news – for Porthcawl – is that:
“Preliminary design on the new bus terminus at the Portway has commenced and is progressing at pace.”
The draft Bridgend Local Development Plan may have played some part in the proposal to drop the Pyle park and ride. The draft LDP suggests relocating Pyle station eastwards to serve a new housing-led development to the south of the A48.
The report also says a consultation of plans to upgrade the Penprysg Road bridge in Pencoed and close the level crossing is currently in development.
